Born and raised in Decatur, Alabama, Chef Chuck Smithson’s passion and love for food started at an early age while cooking with his family in the kitchen. Here he learned to use fresh, seasonal products and to truly enjoy cooking with and for his favorite people.
After graduating from Auburn University with a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Chuck moved on to Johnson & Wales University where he refined his culinary skills and discovered his true passion. From there, Chuck worked as a sous chef under critically acclaimed chef, Bob Waggoner, and executive chef, Michelle Weaver, of the AAA Four-Diamond & Mobile Four-Star, Charleston Grill.
Chuck has resided in the Charleston area for over 20 years and truly believes in the power of food and connecting with people – intimate settings, small group events, and in-home chef services are where he really shines. He currently lives in the West Ashley area with his wife, Jessica, son, Bennett, and daughters Anna Kate and Maggie.
Chef Chuck generously prepared a Valentine’s lunch for the patients, families, and staff of MUSC’s inpatient bone marrow transplant and hematology/oncology unit. Patients who had not eaten for several days cleaned their plate. It brought comfort to many families who have been in the hospital setting for weeks. The staff thoroughly enjoyed the meal. I highly recommend Chef Chuck – not only was the food outstanding, he is a kind and generous person.

We just finished a wonderful meal that Chuck prepared to help celebrate my wife’s 70th birthday. Chuck crafted a menu that perfectly mirrored my wife’s taste. The food was absolutely delicious and I would highly recommend. Chuck was ably assisted by his wife Jessica who also kept my grandchildren involved and let us relax and enjoy the experience. In these days of Covid and the fear of eating out, this was a perfect solution to enjoy a five star meal and not leave the house.

Delicious food! I’ve had the pleasure of enjoying this amazing Chef’s cuisine for many years. Most recently his family style Mac ‘n cheese was a huge hit with my kids, husband, and myself, during our time of quarantine. Thanks Chuck!

Chuck did an amazing job catering my husband’s 40th birthday! It was everything we hoped for! The menu was tailored to our favorite things and tasted like fine dining in downtown Charleston, but better because it was in our own backyard with 30 of our friends. Whatever your vision, Chuck can make it happen!

We had the complete Thanksgiving dinner and it was excellent. We especially enjoyed the sweet potatoes. But all of it was delicious. Will definitely be ordering again. I would suggest The Good Cooker to anyone. Great chef and very organized. 5 out of 5 stars!
